TESOL Board Approves Final Phase of Governance Restructuring
At its meeting in October 2017, the TESOL Board of Directors approved several changes composing the final phase of governance restructuring for the association. In 2014, the board initiated the governance restructuring as a result of the final report of the Governance Review Task Force. Subsequently, the board initiated the restructuring in two primary phases: changes to the association’s governing documents and creating the Professional Councils that replaced the Standing Committees. With this final phase, the board has created two new Professional Councils and initiated changes to the affiliation program and member groups within the association. Find out more...

ESE Updates on the LOOK Act
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is working on updated regulations and guidance for implementation of the LOOK act and Seal of Biliteracy. Here are some updates:

Support the Safe Communities Act
MATSOL has joined a coalition of over 100 organizations around the state to support the Safe Communities Act, which protects the civil rights, safety and well-being of all residents by drawing a clear line between immigration enforcement and public safety. State and local police should use their limited resources to fight crime, not on target immigrant community members and their families. The bill would bar police from arresting or detaining a person solely for federal immigration enforcement purposes, or participating in U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigations or raids based solely on immigration status. The bill comports with federal law, and would not stop police from doing their everyday work, arresting people in the course of a criminal investigation, or even working together with federal agencies to fight crime. Find out more...

Please contact your state senator and representative to urge them to support the Safe Communities Act! The Massachusetts Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security must take action and refer this bill out favorably by the end of the month! Click here to email your legislators and join the campaign.

From Migration Policy Institute: This policy brief analyses the opportunities ESSA introduced for DLLs and the early childhood education and care (ECEC) workforce. It begins by setting out key demographics of the DLL population, then discusses trends in the ECEC workforce and its capacity to meet the needs of DLLs and other children in ECEC settings. It maps the ESSA provisions intended to address these needs through support for ECEC workers. Finally, it highlights opportunities to support the recruitment, training, and ongoing development of a robust and culturally responsive workforce. View report...
