2019 Board of Directors Call for Nominations

Show your commitment to MATSOL and help shape our future! MATSOL seeks competent, energetic, committed members to take a leadership role, work on behalf of the organization, and represent MATSOL members and stakeholders. 


By serving on the Board of Directors, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide leadership for achieving MATSOL's mission to promote equity and excellence for English Learners;
  • Help shape development of member activities, professional learning opportunities, and conferences;
  • Participate in advocacy at the local, state, and national level;
  • Encourage engaged and active MATSOL membership;
  • Build on our affiliate partnership with TESOL;
  • Ensure that MATSOL continues to operate as a healthy and vibrant non-profit organization.


The Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing MATSOL’s operations:

  • Strategic planning and development;
  • Membership activities, programs, and the annual conference;
  • Advocacy initiatives and responses;
  • Membership development;
  • TESOL affiliate responsibilities;
  • Financial and legal obligations as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

  • Willingness to take an active leadership role in MATSOL and make a commitment for your board term.
  • MATSOL membership in good standing for at least one year prior to nomination, with previous participation or leadership in MATSOL activities and initiatives (conference, member meetings, advocacy, publications, etc.).
  • Previous experience on a non-profit board is helpful but not required.

Board Member Commitment

MATSOL’s Board members are expected to:

  • Serve a three-year term from June 2019 to May 2022.
  • Take an active role in the organization
  • Attend all Board of Directors meetings (approximately 9 per year, in person or virtual), the Board annual retreat, the MATSOL conference, and occasional special meetings, at locations in the Greater Boston area.
  • Serve on at least one standing committee (Finance, Governance, Program, or External Relations Committees), and attend meetings and complete tasks related to the work of the committee.
  • Complete organizational tasks and committee work outside Board meetings.

Nomination Process

Candidates for the Board of Directors may self-nominate or be nominated by a colleague.  Nominations deadline extended to April 1, 2019. 

The nominee (whether self-nominated or nominated by someone else) should complete the 2019 Board Nomination Form (.docx) and email it with a resume or CV to [email protected] with the subject line “Board Nomination”.

If the candidate is nominated by a colleague, the nominator should write a Letter of Support stating why you are recommending the candidate for the MATSOL Board of Directors. Email the letter to apply [at] matsol.org with the subject line “Board Nomination.”

All materials will be forwarded to the MATSOL Nominations Committee for review. The Committee will contact the candidates for a brief interview, to explain more about being a Board member, and to answer any questions about the position. 

The candidate election will take place at the MATSOL Annual Meeting at the conference in May 2019.
