Description

This course is designed for ESL teachers to develop their knowledge and skill in understanding Massachusetts English Language development standards and using the standards to inform explicit ESL instruction and curriculum writing.  Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Make connections between current research-based approaches (including Systemic Functional linguistics) and English language development and language instruction.
  • Use high-leverage language and WIDA’s proficiency level descriptors (2020) to inform ESL curriculum mapping, unit and lesson design and sequencing, and revision. 
  • Explore points of connection to WIDA 2020 ELD Standards, MA DESE ESL Curriculum Unit resources, and other approaches and tools.
  • Identify similarities and differences in ELD instruction in varied contexts, such as in self-contained ESL groupings or in a co-teaching model. 

Participants will choose a culminating task that addresses an identified area of need, applying concepts from the course to designing, revising and/or planning delivery of standards-informed English language curricula. 

Basic familiarity with the WIDA 2020 ELD Standards is helpful but not required. Suggested text: A printed copy of WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, 2020 Edition: Kindergarten-Grade 12 available at https://wida.wisc.edu/teach/standards/eld/2020.

Format

Online: 3 synchronous (live) online sessions plus 3 asynchronous independent work modules.

PDPs

Fulfills requirement for 15 PDPs in English learner education for recertification.
