The Community College ESL Faculty Special I
nterest Group (SIG) is a group for faculty and staff in ESL/ESOL programs a
t Community Colleges in Massachusetts. The group meets several times during
the school year, and communicates via a MATSOL E-List. Some issues the gr
oup has addressed include: Credentialing for ESL across the state; The rela
tionships between Adult Basic Education, workforce ESL and academic ESL; Be
ing proactive on the college campus; Over-reliance on adjunct faculty; Gran
ts and their effects on our programs; Defining success for a community coll
ege student; Anti-immigrant backlash; Academic credit for ESL: Writing posi

The Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes high school
graduates who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in
English and a world language by high school graduation. The goal of the awa
rd is to promote life-long language learning and recognize the assets of mu
ltilingual students.
Several Massachusetts state colleges and univers ities now grant college credit to incoming students who earned the Seal in high school.
