About the SIG:

The Community College ESL Faculty Special Interest Group (SIG) is a group for faculty and staff in ESL/ESOL programs at Community Colleges in Massachusetts. The group meets several times during the school year, and communicates via a MATSOL E-List. Some issues the group has addressed include: Credentialing for ESL across the state; The relationships between Adult Basic Education, workforce ESL and academic ESL; Being proactive on the college campus; Over-reliance on adjunct faculty; Grants and their effects on our programs; Defining success for a community college student; Anti-immigrant backlash; Academic credit for ESL: Writing position papers on important issues. Visit the Community College ESL Faculty SIG page.

About this meeting:

Enrollments in many Academic ESL Programs have taken a hit recently – likely at least in part due to required changes in class modalities. All of this is happening at a time when it seems the entire academic world is at least attempting to face up to long standing issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. While there may be no easy answers as to what can be done about this, some programs are experimenting.

Please join the Community College ESL Faculty SIG on Thursday, December 2 at 3:30 PM to learn more about what one institution, North Shore Community College, is doing to turn this around.

Presenters include:

  • Christian Bednar, Interim Dean of Liberal Studies at North Shore CC
  • Elizabeth Paz, Special Program Coordinator of ESL at NSCC

You do NOT have to be a MATSOL member to join these meetings, but if you would like to support MATSOL in our mission to always promote equity and excellence for all English Learners, please consider becoming a member here.
