Effective Practices for Engaging EL Families Through an SEL Lens

Engaging families during the Coronavirus school closure has been difficult for many schools. This is especially true of our EL students and families. During this hour-long discussion, Lisa Kingkade, Milford Public School SEL Director and Jen Cutler, Ashland Public School Director of Counseling and SEL will provide successful strategies that have worked in their districts. Then, participants will engage in a small group facilitated discussion. This discussion will be focused around the following questions:

  1. How can schools help EL families understand the ramifications of the coronavirus? What has worked and what has been challenging?
  2. How do you cultivate SEL supports within the community? How do you help EL families access these resources?
  3. Engaging EL families during a typical school year is difficult. With the school closure, this has compounded this specific issue. How have you helped schools engage all families, especially EL families, during the school closure?

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mrs. Kingade and Mrs. Cutler will share some resources and articles specifically about SEL and EL Families that participants can take back to their districts to support their work.

The Family-School Partnership brings together educators working with linguistically and culturally diverse families. The group will share information and resources, collaborate, and work together to address emerging issues affecting families in our schools. Visit the Family-School Partnership SIG page.
