Family-School Partnership SIG Meeting: Understanding the Dual-Capacity Framework for Family-School Partnerships
The Dual Capacity-Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships should be seen as a compass, laying out the goals and conditions necessary to chart a path toward effective family engagement efforts that are linked to student achievement and school improvement. It was formulated using the research on effective family engagement and home–school partnership strategies and practices, adult learning and motivation, and leadership development.  SIG Spotlight: ESL Curriculum Developers
We have a new Special Interest Group that is starting very soon! Read this introduction from MATSOL member Jessica Nguy to find out more:
ESL teachers throughout the state - many having completed the Next Generation MCU Facilitator Training - are developing ESL curriculum that incorporates the backward design model (Wiggins & McTighe). Imagine how much more we could accomplish by working together! The goal of the ESL Unit Developers SIG is to collaborate in writing, implementing, and sharing WIDA ELD Standards-based units in order to promote effective learning for ESL students statewide.

Opportunity Delayed: FY 2021 Governor's Budget for K-12 Funding Falls Short by $74M for Low-Income Kids
As part of implementing the Commonwealth’s new school funding law, the Student Opportunity Act (SOA), the Governor proposed increasing Chapter 70 aid by $303.5 million over current levels in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 budget. In this first year, the Governor delivers on one-seventh (14 percent) of the SOA reforms in most areas —special education, health care for educators, social-emotional support, and increments for English Language Learners — keeping those reforms on track for full implementation in seven years. Using the Practice Guide to Improve Mathematical Problem Solving in Grades 4-8
This webinar will explore how Improving Mathematical Problem Solving in Grades 4 Through 8: A Practice Guide supports the professional development of mathematics teachers in grades 4–8. Dr. Herb Turner will present an overview of the practice guide approach, including how this approach produces credible, evidence-based, and useful recommendations that can be applied in practice. Dr. Pam Buffington will discuss how the practice guide can be used to guide the professional development of mathematics teachers using examples from her current work. Finally, a mathematics teacher and coach will share their experiences and discuss how educators in leadership positions can support teachers as they use these practices. March 18 at 3:30 P.M. Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) Releases New Fact Sheets on EL Demographic Trends, Head Start Enrollment, and College and Career Readiness
English Learners: Demographic Trends: As of school year 2016-2017, the EL population grew by more than one million students to 4,858,377, representing 9.6% of the total student enrollment. This fact sheet also highlights data on state increases and decreases in the EL student population.
Head Start Enrollment: This fact sheet shares data on Head Start participants' EL status, primary home language, race and ethnicity, and the frequency that participants were read to at home. In fiscal year 2017, 28% of Head Start families spoke a language other than English at home.
English Learners: College and Career Readiness: Over 3.3 million high school students participated in SAT or ACT exams in the 2015–16 school year (SY). Over 93,000 English learners (ELs) participated in SAT or ACT exams in SY 2015–16. ELs represented 2.8% of high school students who participated in SAT or ACT and represented 6% of all students enrolled in U.S. high schools.
