2020 Conference Call for Proposals
We invite our members to submit a proposal to present at the 2020 MATSOL Conference. MATSOL encourages engaging, interactive presentations that make the theory to practice connection. Successful proposals include practical classroom activities informed by current research and pedagogy, demonstrations of successful instructional practices, examinations of current issues in education, and research that informs educators in the Massachusetts context. New MATSOL Forum for Community PD Offerings
MATSOL is introducing a new resource for our members: the Community PD Offerings forum, a space for members to post and view information about local professional development opportunities.
To view or post in the forum, look for the "Community Forum" link in the "Quick Links" menu at www.matsol.org, or follow this direct link. Member login is required to access the forum. You can subscribe to the topics in the forum and get any new messages directly to your inbox.
Please note that the courses and services posted in the forum are not reviewed or endorsed by MATSOL, and we advise that you research any PD providers before engaging them.
Success and Syncopation at the Social!
Thank you to everyone who came to the MATSOL Fall Social! We hope you had a great time and enjoyed the company, the food, and the drumming activity. We really came together as a drumming group! If you couldn't make it this year, please remember to join us next time - whether in person or online! Yes, we live-streamed the presentation and the activity, and we kept a live-video feed going the whole time. Thank you to the pioneering members who logged in and chatted with us online at the social. We hope to see you all next year!

Bilingual Education Endorsement
DESE recently published a memo on the requirements for educators to receive a Bilingual Education Endorsement, and the memo also contains other information that may be helpful to school districts that are offering or planning to offer a bilingual education program. Topics in the memo include pathways for obtaining the Bilingual Education Endorsement, information on waiver applications, the endorsement’s relationship to previous Transitional Bilingual Educator credentials, and where to go for more information. Supporting Immigrant Students
The obligation not to discriminate based on race, color, or national origin requires public schools to take affirmative steps to ensure that limited English proficient (LEP) students, now more commonly known as English Learner (EL) students or English Language Learners (ELLs), can meaningfully participate in educational programs and services, and to communicate information to LEP parents in a language they can understand. Monitoring Educational Equity
Disparities in educational attainment among population groups have characterized the United States throughout its history. Education is sometimes characterized as the “great equalizer,” but to date, the country has not found ways to successfully address the adverse effects of socioeconomic circumstances, prejudice, and discrimination that suppress performance for some groups. 'English-Only' Laws in Education on Verge of Extinction
Just 15 years ago, bilingual education was banned in three states—Arizona, California, and Massachusetts—which altogether educated 40 percent of the nation’s English-language learners. Supporting English Learners Through Technology
A new study from the U.S. Department of Education’s Policy and Program Studies Service found that 85 percent of teachers reported using various types of educational technology when instructing their English Learner (EL) students. The study collected data during the 2016-17 school year through a nationally representative survey of districts that enrolled EL students, a teacher survey that included both mainstream teachers and EL specialists, and case studies of six districts to provide more in-depth information about district and teacher practices. Findings cover how districts and teachers identified digital learning resources (DLRs), how teachers used DLRs, supports for and barriers to DLR use, and suggestions for improving the usefulness of DLRs in instruction of EL students.
