MATSOL 2019 Conference 
Registration for the conference is filling up fast!

  • There are seats available in the Pre-Conference Institute Learning Content-Based Literacies: Systemic Functional Linguistics in Action, but the PCI Co-Teaching for English Learners is sold out.
  • Due to the snow day on Monday, MATSOL is extending the date to upload group registrations until the end of the day Tuesday, March 5.

MATSOL @ TESOL
We look forward to see our MATSOL colleagues at the TESOL Convention next week in Atlanta GA.

Submit to MATSOL Currents
There’s a lot going on in the world of TESOL and EL education, and we’d like all of it to be reflected in MATSOL Currents! We welcome reviews of books and materials, reports on meetings and events, personal experience accounts, and articles on everything of interest to MATSOL members. We also wants to support our members to develop an article for publication, so the editors can give you feedback on a draft article or on an idea for an article you are thinking about writing. The submission deadline for Currents is May 15. Find out more...

2019 TESOL Advocacy & Policy Summit
The only event of its kind in the United States, the TESOL Advocacy & Policy Summit is an unparalleled professional development opportunity for educators to learn about U.S. federal education issues and advocate for policies that support English learners and the field of English language education.  MATSOL will be represented by President Juanita Brunelle, but other MATSOL members may also register and attend (and please let us know if you do to coordinate legislative visits!). Brockton teachers plan trip to Cape Verde
MATSOL Past President Kellie Jones is leading a trip with Brockton school staffers to Cape Verde during the April vacation. The Brockton group will tour the University of Cape Verde, and will visit urban schools in the capital city Praia, and rural schools on the island of Fogo, where many of Brockton’s Cape Verdean families are from. The goal of the trip is to teach the teachers about the educational and cultural traditions that shaped a large segment of Brockton’s students. New accommodations for English learners participating in next-generation tests and high school retests: This year, English learners will have access to several English learner accommodations that were not previously available. ADVOCACY UPDATE
TESOL Statement on the Reaching English Learners Act
TESOL International Association is proud to affirm its support of the bipartisan Reaching English Learners Act (H.R. 1153, S. 535). Amending the Higher Education Act, this bill establishes a competitive grant program for institutions of higher education to partner with high-need school districts to develop teacher preparation programs to help close the achievement gap experienced by English learners. Language Learning with Netflix
Netflix can be a great study resource for intermediate and advanced learners, but there are some difficulties (poor subs, no translations, dialogues go by too quickly etc.). This chrome extension gives you superpowers over Netflix that makes learning with films/series more effective and enjoyable. After installation, you will have an additional panel with language learning features when you watch videos on the Netflix website. View resource...

OPPORTUNITY
Applications Open for Language Access Fellowship 
The Language Access Fellowship program, which provides medical interpreter training and job placement to low-income bilingual women, is accepting applications for the 2019 class. The program is completely free, includes common-sense supports such as on-site childcare, transportation assistance, and mentoring, leading to jobs that pay $25+/hour entry-level. Our admissions process is highly competitive; in the Class of 2018 there were 37 women selected from over 250 applicants. To be eligible for our program, an applicant must self-identify as a woman, be fluent in English and another language, be eligible to work in the United States, and be considered low income.
