Introduce ESL teachers to Next Generation ESL through an instructional approach and development process

Description:

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, has begun to roll out new tools, processes, templates, tools and facilitator training to assist districts with initial and long-term implementation, through planning and continuous improvement cycles.

This one day Next Generation ESL MCUs:  A Practical Orientation for ESL Teachers is intended to introduce ESL teachers  to Next Generation ESL through an instructional lens prior to participating with a district team the Next Generation ESL Unit development process.

This overview provides:

  • information about the focus of ESL instruction in Massachusetts,
  • the rationale for Next-Generation ESL (Theoretical, Practical and Programmatic)
  • strategies for establishing necessary teacher collaboration between ESL and content teachers in their collective roles within an EL program.
  • an opportunity to explore and “look inside” next generation ESL units with a lens for next generation instructional practices, in a guided way
  • an opportunity to understand and try out Next-Generation ESL teaching in their own classroom,  at the unit and lesson level and share learning and outcomes in a supportive professional learning community

MATSOL Course Registration & Payment Policies

Audience

This orientation is designed for ESL teachers and other content colleagues, administrators and coaches who support and collaborate in curriculum development for English learners. Teachers have an opportunity to learn about the tools and resources associated with the NGESL initiative and try out ESL Model Curriculum Units. 

Format

This course will consist of one 6-hour face-to-face session, with the participant requirement of implementing one ESL MCU unit and participating in a webinar.  There is also an on-line components that is accessed during the course.  Upon successful completion of the session, the participants will receive 10 PDPs.
