2016 Seal of Biliteracy Awards
The first Seal of Biliteracy Awards were presented in Massachusetts in the spring of 2016 by schools and school districts participating in the Seal of Biliteracy Pilot Project. Eight school districts made awards to more than 300 students in World Language, Dual Language and TBE programs. More...

Community College ESL Mini-Conference Success
More than 40 community college educators came together on October 21 for a day of workshops on topics including intake and assessment, transitioning ESL students, and advocating for ESL programs. Special thanks to the conference organizers and speakers Bruce Riley, Darlene Furdock, Eileen Kelley, Vivian Leskes, Madhu Sharma, and Jennifer Nourse, as well as Mass Bay CC Framingham for hosting the event.

Nov 15: Our Shared Table Thanksgiving Luncheon
The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA) invites you to share a Thanksgiving meal with immigrant and refugee communities, service providers, and legislators on November 15th, from 11:30 am to 1 pm at the Massachusetts State House. Our Shared Table highlights the positive impact of immigrants in Massachusetts. We join together to celebrate our state and our country’s immigrant heritage, and to recognize the countless contributions of immigrants past and present to the social and economic well-being of our Commonwealth. Our Shared Table is open and free for all, but we cannot guarantee seating in the event hall. Nov 18-20: ACTFL 2016 Annual Convention and World Languages Expo
The American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) 2016 conference takes place in Boston this year. An international event bringing together more than 6,000 language educators from all languages, levels, and assignments, the conference provides a comprehensive professional development experience that will have an impact on language educators at all levels of teaching and in turn impact their students to succeed in their language learning process. More...

Celebrating 30 years of academic ESL at Holyoke Community College
State Rep. Aaron Vega, D-Holyoke and Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse joined Holyoke Community College faculty, staff and students to celebrate HCC ESL program's 30th  anniversary. During that time, ESL at HCC grew from a non-credit program with three part-time teachers and 40-plus students to a team of five full-time professors and about 14 adjunct instructors teaching 34 classes per semester to hundreds of students.  Kudos to Eileen Kelley, coordinator of ESL Support Services at HCC (and member of the MATSOL Community College ESL Faculty Network), and her colleagues for organizing this event to recognize the success of the program. Citizenship Clinics
MIRA Coalition offers personalize guidance through the naturalization form, step by step, including a waiver for the federal fees if the applicant qualifies. When you attend a clinic, you will join 20-40 other individuals who are also applying for citizenship. Our Citizenship Team works together with a group of trained volunteers to go through the N-400 Application for Naturalization with you one-on-one. At a clinic you will go through 4 stations: 1) Check-in & Registration 2) Screening for Eligibility 3) Completing the Application 4) Quality Control. The whole process takes between 2 and 3 hours. We will keep a copy of your documents in our office, and receive United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) notices about your citizenship appointments. English Learners ​& ESSA: What Educators Need to Know - A TESOL Resource Kit

This resource kit explores in an in-depth manner the first four titles of ESSA, which outlines: (1) how funding for low-income school districts is allocated and accountability measures for states (Title I), (2) how funds for states and districts are distributed and can be used for teacher training and professional development (Title II), (3) how technical assistance and funding of instruction for ELs will be made available and new data reporting requirements (Title III), and (4) how funds will be allocated to states and districts for school enrichment and flexibility (Title IV).

Talking Jobs: Lessons from ENB's 2016 ESOL Student Employment Survey
English for New Bostonians’ Student Employment Survey offers us a fresh perspective on the demand for ESOL, drawing data from a novel source: immigrant workers, reporting on their own aspirations and on their coworkers’ need for English classes. Analyzed in partnership with the National Skills Coalition, Talking Jobs demonstrates, above all, the substantial untapped human capital – in terms of foreign work experience, professional credentials, determination and aspiration – that immigrants have to offer for our state. Importantly, the survey also yielded information about 700+ MA businesses at which immigrants are employed, that will inform our outreach to employers regarding their workers’ skill-building needs.
